Many projects, whether they involve business operations or real estate and industrial development, can pose environmental risks. It is mandatory to assess these risks before any permit is issued.
Environmental Impact Assessment (EIE) aims to transparently and objectively identify, describe, and assess the significant environmental impacts of a project. In Belgium, regional authorities require it as part of a permit application (environmental, single, or urban planning) or as part of a procedure for recognizing a SAR perimeter.

A legal instrument governed by regional regulations
In all three regions, class 1 and 2 activities and facilities require an environmental permit. All class 1 projects and certain others identified by the authorities are subject to an environmental impact assessment (EIA). The EIA is a mandatory legal instrument carried out by a firm accredited by the regional authorities.
Permit applications for class 2 or 1B projects must be accompanied by an impact assessment notice (NEI) in Wallonia, or an environmental impact report (RIE) in Brussels and Flanders. These documents outline the project's key environmental parameters and analyze its impacts.
