BREEAM, DGNB, and HQE: The Three Major Environmental Certifications
BREEAM
A pioneer since 1990, BREEAM certification is now recognized in over 85 countries. It evaluates buildings across 10 categories (including energy, health, materials, water, and biodiversity) based on several standards (such as New Construction, In-Use, and Refurbishment and Fit Out), and assigns a rating ranging from "Pass" to "Outstanding."
DGNB
Originating in Germany, the DGNB certification covers the entire building life cycle through four frameworks (new construction, renovation, operation, and deconstruction). It evaluates six categories and awards a rating ranging from "bronze" to "platinum."
HQE (High Environmental Quality)
Launched by CERTIVEA, the HQE Building certification is available in 3 versions (Construction, Renovation, Operation) and evaluates 14 targets organized around 4 commitments (eco-construction, eco-management, comfort, health). There are 4 levels of performance, ranging from "performant" to "exceptional".
